🎖 Lead Story
SPRING'S OVER. THE BEST PLAYERS DON'T STOP. HERE'S WHERE TO DEVELOP THIS SUMMER.
Every June the same thing happens: the spring season wraps, the boots go in the closet, and a lot of players go quiet until fall. The ones who come back better in September are usually the ones who kept touching a ball over the summer. Georgia has more ways to do that this year than it has had in a while, from a residential camp to free open sessions anyone can walk onto. Here are three worth circling.
|
July 6 to 10 • Roswell Area Park • Ages 5 to 14
REBELS SUMMER SKILLS & DRILLS CAMP
A week of fundamentals for ages 5 to 14, all skill levels, beginners included. Passing, catching, footwork, and the fun that makes kids come back. Registration is open now through the City of Roswell. A great first step for a younger player, or a tune-up before the fall season. Register here.
|
|
July 23 to 29 • Marietta • Girls 13 to 17
LIFE UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S GIRLS SUMMER RESIDENCY
For girls who want a real step up, Life University's women's program is running a residential development camp on its Marietta campus, July 23 to 29, for ages 13 to 17 at all skill levels. Technical and tactical work, strength, and leadership, with on-campus housing and meals, led by Director Ryszard Chadwick, a World Rugby Coach Educator, alongside current Life U players. Off a national-title spring, this is a chance to train inside one of the country's top women's programs.
Residency $1,500 or commuter $850. Register through HomeTown Ticketing; questions to Director Ryszard Chadwick at ryszard.chadwick@life.edu. Details at liferunningeagles.com.
|
|
All summer • Free or low-cost • Walk on
OR JUST KEEP PLAYING
You do not need a camp to develop. Summer sevens and touch are the lowest-pressure way to build skill in the game, fewer players, more touches, more space to try things. Exiles run youth and U19 Academy sessions Tuesdays and Thursdays at Innovation Academy in Alpharetta, and open adult and community sessions are running across the state (see Summer Play Is Open, below). The point is simple: keep a ball in your hands, and September takes care of itself.

🏆 The Result
PEACH PITCH 7S PULLED THE WHOLE SOUTHEAST TO LITHONIA
|
Saturday, May 30 • Southeast Complex, Lithonia GA
The third annual Peach Pitch 7s, presented by High Country Women's Rugby and billed as the biggest all women's-plus 7s in the Southeast, lived up to it: 15 teams across three pools, sides driving in from Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and North Carolina, and a final under the lights at 3:20 PM. This is a social tournament, not a nationals qualifier, and that is exactly the point, it is where women's rugby in this region comes to play and to be seen.
On the podium
1st • Fayetteville Lady Valkyries (Fayetteville, NC), who came down from North Carolina and took it. |
2nd • Women of Old White, the metro Atlanta women's side, runners-up on home soil. |
3rd • Atlanta 2.0 Selects (Marietta, GA), rounding out the top three. |
Georgia was well represented across the field, with Gwinnett Lady Lions, Atlanta Harlequins, Augusta Furies, Savannah Shamrocks, Lanier 7's, and the Magnolia Drifters all in the mix. If you want a snapshot of where women's rugby in the South is right now, this was it. Full galleries on @peachpitchrugby7s.

🥍 Summer Play Is Open
A NEW HIGH SCHOOL 7S, AND OPEN PITCHES ALL OVER THE STATE
Summer is the easiest time of year to try rugby or to keep building if you already play. The barrier is low, the sides are small, and most of what is running this month welcomes beginners. Start with a brand-new event for high schoolers, then find a pitch near you.
|
Sat Jun 13 • 9:00 AM • Atlanta Rugby Grounds, 1035 Fairburn Rd SW • Come Watch
HOTLANTA HIGH SCHOOL 7S (INAUGURAL)
A first-of-its-kind high school 7s tournament, hosted by Atlanta Old White with one stated goal: grow the high school game in this state. Saturday, June 13, 9 AM kickoff at Atlanta Rugby Grounds. A community GoFundMe is helping cover the cost of getting it off the ground. If you have a high schooler who plays, or one who is curious, this is a great morning to go stand on the touchline.
|
|
Where to play 7s and touch this summer

A STORIED ATLANTA SIDE HAS A CLOCK TICKING
|
Worth Watching
THE RENEGADES ARE COUNTING DOWN TO SOMETHING
A countdown clock is live on atlantarenegades.com under a single line: "The Renegades Are Coming!" The club is saying precisely nothing about what it counts down to. A storied Atlanta men's side with something in the works, and no announcement to spoil it. We are not going to guess. Go watch the clock yourself at atlantarenegades.com and keep an eye on @atlrenegadesrfc. Their standing summer 7s is in the roundup above.

🎓 College Corner
OFFSEASON, BUT THE PLANNING NEVER STOPS
|
Georgia's college spring seasons have wrapped and June is quiet on the field, but the work moves to recruiting and camps. Life University Women, off a national-title spring, turn next to their summer girls' residency in Marietta, July 23 to 29 (see the Lead Story). UGA and Georgia Tech are already lining up their fall recruiting. If your player is a rising senior, summer is when the next step gets real.

💬 Whispers from the Touchline
Lady Trydown
The anonymous dispatch on Georgia rugby. All rumor, all hearsay, all in good fun.
Dearest Reader,
The season has scattered everyone to sevens and touch, and the touchline, as ever, hums with small intrigues. This Author has gathered three for your amusement. Proceed.
First, a certain devoted soul has been spotted at Monday's session with one side, Wednesday's with another, and Thursday's with a third, wearing whichever shirt sat nearest the door. This Author cannot determine which club he belongs to, and increasingly suspects neither can he. In summer, it seems, loyalty is a thing one rotates.
Then, this Author understands a certain band of devoted parents recently convened to determine whether a second group ought to be convened. No resolution was reached, though a third gathering may yet be required to discuss the matter. Rugby is played in eighty minutes, darlings. Its administration is eternal.
And finally, somewhere in this state a glorious summer tour is being plotted: three tournaments, several states, matching shirts and all, every detail settled save two trifling questions, who shall drive the children there, and who shall pay for the privilege. Ambition is a beautiful thing, darlings. A carpool roster and a fundraiser are better ones.
Until next week. Mind the offside line, mind the group chat, and do keep your whistle close.
xo, Lady Trydown

🎓 Train Up
GET CERTIFIED
Every club needs more refs and more coaches. Here is the honest picture this month: there are no coaching or referee courses available to book right now. When new dates post, you will find them in the USA Rugby Learning Center via Rugby Xplorer, and GA Youth Rugby reimburses certification costs for active referees and coaches. The good news is below.
|
Coming soon, closer to home: Rebels Rugby is working to host a Level 1 Coach course right here in the Atlanta area. Dates and location are still being locked in. We will run the details the moment they are confirmed, so watch this space.
