MORE ROOMS TO PLAY IN: GEORGIA'S GIRLS AND WOMEN'S GAME IS GROWING
The fastest-growing corner of Georgia rugby this summer is the one built for girls and women. Up in Alpharetta, Exiles RFC is standing up a brand-new U19 Girls program for the coming season and has already named its head coach, with more news promised for the senior women's side. It is the newest entry in a statewide picture that keeps adding sides: a girls-only club in the metro, women's sides from Gwinnett to Augusta, a year-round women's club in the north, and a reigning national champion training the next group on a campus in Marietta. More teams, in more places, with more ways in.
|
New for 2026-27 • Alpharetta
EXILES LAUNCH A U19 GIRLS PROGRAM
Exiles RFC has announced a new U19 Girls program for the upcoming season and named Coach Keliah Newman as its head coach. Newman steps into the role from within the Georgia youth game and will build the side from its first practice. The club is also teasing news on its senior women's side, and it is putting out an open invitation: anyone who wants to learn the game in a real club environment is welcome to come find the coaching staff. The Exiles run youth and senior sessions out of Innovation Academy and North Park, so a new girls side has a full club around it from day one.

Across the State
WHERE GIRLS AND WOMEN PLAY IN GEORGIA
That new side joins a game that already runs deep, with far too many places to name them all here. Some girls and women play on dedicated sides: the girls-only Atlanta Valkyries in the metro, women's clubs from Gwinnett to Augusta, a women's side that trains year-round in the north, the Southeast's D1 women's team, and Life University Women, reigning national champions, who run a girls' summer camp (in Develop This Summer below).
And it is not only girls-only sides. Plenty of girls play coed at the youth clubs, from Rebels Rugby (U8 through high school) to the Forsyth Falcons to the Old White Lions and well beyond. The barrier to a first practice has never been lower.
This is a snapshot, not the full map. Every Georgia club is in Find a Youth Club and Find an Adult Club below. If your girls or women's side is not there yet, tell us and we will add it.

🏉 Summer Play Is Open
OPEN PITCHES ALL OVER THE STATE
Tournaments are the headline, but the real summer story is the open sessions running every week. The barrier is low, the sides are small, and most of what is running this month welcomes beginners. Find a pitch near you, in the metro or well beyond it.
|

DOWN ON THE COAST: THE SAVANNAH SHAMROCKS
|
Rugby in Georgia is not just a metro Atlanta story, and the Savannah Shamrocks are the proof. Founded in 1978, the club now runs more than 100 members across a men's side, a women's side, and an old boys squad, and the men have gone back-to-back, champions in 2025 and 2026, out of their home at Daffin Park.
They are opening the doors to the next generation, too, with a youth try-day on Sunday, June 28 (ages 6 to 14) at Timber Trail Park in Richmond Hill. And every March the Shamrocks host the St. Patrick's Day Tournament at Daffin Park, one of the largest in the country at 85-plus teams from across the US, Canada, England, and Ireland. rugbysavannah.com

🎓 College Corner
OFFSEASON, BUT THE PLANNING NEVER STOPS
|
Georgia's college spring seasons have wrapped and June is quiet on the field, but the real recruiting window is almost here. When students land on campus in August, most college rugby clubs set up at the student activities fair, the club-rush tables where the majority of college players actually sign up, no experience required. UGA, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, UNG, and Life University all take walk-ons that way every fall. Life University Women, off a national-title spring, also run a summer girls' residency in Marietta, July 23 to 29 (see Develop This Summer above). If your player is heading to one of these schools, the move is simple: find the rugby table in week one.

Recruiting tool: collegerugbyportal.com is free, lists 900-plus college programs (men's and women's, D1 through club), and lets players filter by state and message coaches directly. Treat listings as a starting point and confirm details with the school.

💬 Whispers from the Touchline
Lady Trydown
The anonymous dispatch on Georgia rugby. All rumor, all hearsay, all in good fun.
Dearest Reader,
The pitches are quiet, which means the tongues most certainly are not. A few morsels from a slow and sweltering off-season:
On selection. There is no fiercer tactician than the one with no actual responsibilities. This Author watched three separate authorities settle an entire autumn lineup over a single warm evening, each utterly certain, each flatly contradicting the last, and not one of them ever once asked. The pitch, when it reopens, has a marvelous way of sorting the talkers from the doers.
On summer fitness. Every July the same small miracle occurs: an entire club discovers running. The dispatches arrive, breathless and proud, of dawn sessions and dry Julys and a leaner, faster self who will be unveiled come September. This Author has witnessed a great many such Septembers. She wishes this year's new self safe travels, and a soft landing back at the bar.
On the destination tournament. The rugby is the point, naturally. Of course it is. The sand, the surf, and the suspiciously large cooler are merely supporting players. Compete well, and do reapply the sunscreen.
On the new kit. A certain sort of player insists he could not possibly care about the new jersey, right up until the pre-order window opens, at which point he refreshes the page like a man possessed. We see you. We have always seen you.
xo, Lady Trydown

🎓 Train Up
GET CERTIFIED
Every club needs more refs and more coaches. Here is the honest picture this month: there are no coaching or referee courses scheduled in Georgia right now. The nearest regional option is a Level 1 Referee course in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday June 26, with more following in Charlotte (July 12) and Knoxville (July 17). When new in-state dates post, you will find them in the USA Rugby Learning Center via Rugby Xplorer, and GA Youth Rugby reimburses certification costs for active referees and coaches. The good news is below.
|
Coming soon, closer to home: Rebels Rugby is working to host a Level 1 Coach course right here in the Atlanta area. Dates and location are still being locked in. We will run the details the moment they are confirmed, so watch this space.
